Spartans combine fun with real-world education in Belgium

Spartans will travel the globe in search of new ways to learn, and have a little fun along the way! Right now, 15 Broad and 2 CAS students are visiting Belgium as part of the Global Finance Studies program. After landing in Brussels, Belgium on July 9th, the group spent the next day in the Ardennes forest of Dinant, where they participated in team building activities which included a very competitive, yet friendly game of paintball.

Antoinette Tessmer, faculty leader, teaches FI311 and FI451 from Monday through Thrusday on the campus of the University of Namur (UN) in Namur, Belgium (about a 1 hour train ride south of Brussels). Along with the top-quality classroom experience Spartans are used to, another of the great things about this program is the opportunity to visit and learn from local businesses as well. One such opportunity was a field trip to Mex&Go, a start-up restaurant in Louvain-La-Neuve, where the group met with the two young entrepreneurs who served delicious burritos. Mex&Go’s CFO, Lionel, is a UN alumn who studied Finance at MSU in Fall 2013 as an exchange student. Lionel fell in love with Chipotle during his stay in East Lansing, which inspired the Mex&Go concept.

Later in the day, the group attended a workshop at Zaabar’s Chocolate Academy, in Brussels. Who could pass up the chance to sample some world famous Belgian chocolates?!
